Day 18: which sound?

Hi everyone!

Let's  puzzle everyone at home a little bit crazy, with you pronouncing words randomly! Here's the challenge for today:

- Don't tell your family what you're doing.

- Read the words below aloud and determine which sound the consonants in bold make.

- Check with an online dictionary.

- Tell us in the comments which ones were the hardest!

Enjoy!

First set! Are the consonants in bold pronounced...

/ʧ/  as in cheer
/ʃ/  as in fish
/ʒ/  as in usual

or

/ʤ/  as in jump?

average
badge
beige
cabbage
courage
damage
decision
future
injury
insurance
literature
machine
march
vision
moustache
opposition
partial
picture
prestige
question

Second set! Are the g or gh in these words pronounced...

/g/ as in ghost
/f/ as in enough
/ʤ/  as in giant

or

[silent] as in high?

nought
gesture
sign
signature
margarine
guilty
draught
gypsy
thorough
sigh
naughty
borough
gymnasium
gherkin
generation
laughter
ginger
George
giggle
genuine
drought

  1. Hi, Bea,

    My answer:

    Average /ʤ/
    badge /ʤ/
    beige /ʒ/
    cabbage /ʤ/
    courage /ʤ/
    damage /ʤ/
    decision /ʒ/
    future /ʧ/
    injury /ʤ/
    insurance /ʃ/
    literature /ʧ/
    machine /ʃ/
    march /ʧ/
    vision /ʒ/
    moustache /ʃ/
    opposition /ʃ/
    partial /ʃ/
    picture /ʧ/
    prestige /ʒ/
    question /ʧ/

    nought [silent]
    gesture /ʤ/
    sign [silent]
    signature /g/
    margarine /ʤ/
    guilty /g/
    draught /f/
    gypsy /ʤ/
    thorough [silent]
    sigh [silent]
    naughty [silent]
    borough [silent]
    gymnasium /ʤ/
    gherkin /g/
    generation /ʤ/
    laughter /f/
    ginger /ʤ/
    George /ʤ/
    giggle /g/
    genuine /ʤ/
    drought [silent]
    engineer /ʤ/
    genius /ʤ/

For me the hardest sound is /ʤ/ when it is at the end of the words, because, I don´t know why, I tend to pronounce it like the sound /ʧ/ in those cases.

    Thank you.

    1. I see, Daniel! Maybe you just have to relax a little, and call George very often!

    2. Wait, silly me! We have the word "challenge" itself to practice, no need to call a George!

Anyway, just relax your tongue a bit, because it seems to me like that /ʧ/ at the end might be just the result to too much tension.

    1. Aren't those sounds just lovely, Evelia ? ;) Keeping them different, and well pronounced, is a lifelong challenge in itself!
