Day 22: have we done adverbs yet?

Hi everyone!

I think we haven't, have we? Tsk tsk... We shouldn't neglect adverbs.

At this level, I'm sorry to repeat myself, it's extremely important to develop an ear for collocation. This challenge is a series of four mini-challenges that are aimed at training your ear for collocation of adverb+adjective:

- Complete all the challenges. Which one was the hardest?

- What adverb+adjective collocation would you use to describe today's challenge?

Go for it!

1. Take a look at these adverbs. Which ones can be used with tired? And with exhausted? Some can be used with both.

a) very, terribly
b) slightly, a bit, a little
c) rather, somewhat, fairly, moderately
d) utterly, absolutely, completely
e) really, pretty
f) quite
g) extremely

2. Take combinations that you have made in 1 and rank them from "slightly tired" to "absolutely exhausted". How are you feeling right now in the ranking? How will you feel at the end of today's challenge?

3. Match the moderate expressions with their extreme counterparts.

1) quite clean                      a) utterly filthy
2) slightly dirty                   b)simply ridiculous
3) rather impolite                c) completely devastated
4) a bit tricky                      d) incredibly rude
5) somewhat upset              e) quite impossible
6) rather silly                       f) absolutely spotless / squeaky clean

4. Make a sentence for each one of these phrases:

a) reasonably priced tickets
b) dramatically different solutions
c) virtually impossible dilemmas
d) surprisingly few difficulties
e) understandably shocked viewers
f) hopelessly lost hikers

  1. Hi, mates! I'm joining you for the challenge after so long! I'll try to be here everyday! I'll try to do the past challenges I didn't were in :-)

    Here you have my answers:

    - I don't feel this challenge is so hard in comparison to other ones. Instead I find it utterly useful. So thanks Bea for this challenge! Maybe the hardest challenge here would be to memorise the collocations ;-) So, I could say today's challenge has been slightly tiring, but memorising it will probably be fairly exhausting.

1_ TIRED: very, terribly, slightly, a bit, a little, extremely.
EXHAUSTED: rather, somewhat, fairly, moderately, utterly, absolutely, completely
    BOTH: really, pretty, quite

2_RANKING TIRED: slightly, a bit, a little, pretty, quite, very, really, extremely, terribly.
RANKING EXHAUSTED: somewhat, fairly, moderately, rather, pretty, quite, completely, utterly, absolutely, extremely

    3_ 1F, 2A, 3D, 4E, 5C, 6B

    4_
There is a lack of information about reasonably priced tickets for opera events.

The government should take dramatically different solutions to address the devastating pandemic.

Medical workforce is facing the virtually imposible dilema of choosing who must they let die.

He encountered surprisingly few difficulties climbing that mountain.

A considerable number of understandably shocked viewers called to the telephone number to donate money for the much needed masks and respirators in hospitals.

Emergency service use to rescue in average 200 hopelessly lost hickers in these mountains.

    See you tomorrow here!

    1. So glad to see you here again, Ana! Everything was perfect, just let me point out a couple of tiny things in this sentence:

"Medical workforce is facing the virtually imposible dilema of choosing who must they let die."

Impossible and dilemma have double consonants (maybe an autocorrect mistake?), and the indirect structure at the end should be "choosing who they must let die."

      Thank you!

  2. Hello everyone and welcome Ana!

I enjoyed this challenge, Bea :-) and I agree with Ana (what's challenging to me is trying to include these collocations on my speech, but I'll try!)

    Part 1

    a) very, terribly  tired
    b) slightly, a bit, a little  tired
    c) rather, somewhat, fairly, moderately  tired, exhausted
    d) utterly, absolutely, completely  exhausted
    e) really, pretty  tired
    f) quite  tired
    g) extremely  tired

    Part 2.
    Order:
Slightly tired, rather tired, somewhat tired, fairly tired, moderately tired, quite tired, very tired, really tired, terribly tired, extremely tired.
I’d say I’m very tired and might be terribly tire, if not asleep, after finishing the activities.

    Part 3.

    Quite clean – absolutely spotless
    Slightly dirty – utterly filthy
    Rather impolite – incredibly rude
A bit tricky – Quite impossible
    Somewhat upset – Completely devastated
    Rather silly – Simply ridiculous

    Part 4.

Believe or not, they are selling some reasonably priced tickets for next Roland Garros Tournament.
Teachers have adopted dramatically different solutions to tackle this uncertain period.
I love when people engage in virtually impossible dilemmas through a thread in Facebook.
Despite they didn’t speak the same language they found surprisingly few difficulties to understand each other.
Some of the understandably shocked viewers left the threatre when they were asked to take their clothes off.
I can’t imagine how the families of those hopelessly lost hikers might feel at this moment.

Thank you Bea for your relentless effort! :-)

    1. Fantastic, Evelia! One tiiiiny thing, though:

"Despite they didn’t speak the same language..." should be "although they didn't speak..." or "despite not speaking..."

I hope you went to bed right after this! You must've been utterly exhausted when you finished! Thank you!
